This project refurbished the Central Heating Plant (CHP) and modified the coal handling system at the University of Indiana. The refurbished plant capacity is approximately 580,000# St./Hr. of boiler steam capacity. This was accomplished through a combination of refurbishing existing coal stoker boilers and adding a new packaged gas/oil boiler with emissions controls on Boilers 3, 4, and 6.
The CHP scope of work was split into several phases. Phase 1 removed two existing 90,000# St./Hr. coal fired units and replaced them with one new 160,000# St/./Hr. gas/oil fired unit. The project included extensive building alterations, as well as additions to accommodate the baghouse installation of Phase 2. This project involved complex rigging, controls work, chimney alterations, structural steel additions, and the installation of ductwork. The new gas/oil fired unit’s carbon steel stack is 54 inches in diameter and 60 feet high. The plant remained in operation during the entire construction period.
